Frequently Asked Questions

What is Demeter Earth?

Demeter Earth is a direct-to-consumer marketplace connecting local people with local farmers, gardeners, and artisans in order to provide fresher, healthier, and more affordable food. Our platform empowers communities by fostering direct relationships between producers and consumers, with a focus on sustainability and quality.

Where is Demeter Earth Available?

Demeter Earth is available nationwide to sell products like uncut produce, farm-fresh eggs, unprocessed nuts, and raw honey, which are permitted in all 50 states.

If you’re selling prepared food items (like baked goods, jams, or sauces), your state’s cottage food laws may apply. Most states allow these sales locally or online—but a few have restrictions. We recommend checking your local regulations before listing prepared or home-cooked items.

States with more restrictive online cottage food laws (for prepared foods only) include:

Alabama, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, and New Jersey.

That said, you can still sell:

  • Fresh fruits & vegetables
  • Farm-fresh eggs (with proper labeling)
  • Raw nuts & herbs
  • Seeds, plants, compost, and other garden goods
  • Handmade or non-edible artisan products

No commercial kitchen or food handler’s permit is required for unprocessed farm goods in any state.
